Celebrating the Rich Legacy of the Gullah Culture

Every February, Hilton Head Island comes alive with the sights, sounds, and flavors of the Gullah Celebration—a month-long tribute to the vibrant heritage, artistry, and resilience of the Gullah Geechee people. From storytelling and live performances to art exhibitions and traditional cuisine, this annual event invites locals and visitors to connect with a culture whose roots run deep along the South Carolina and Georgia coast.

Presented by the Native Island Business & Community Affairs Association (NIBCAA)—a steadfast supporter of the Fish and Grits Music Festival since its inaugural year—the Gullah Celebration is more than a festival. It’s a living history lesson where guests can taste authentic dishes like shrimp and grits or okra gumbo, enjoy live gospel and jazz concerts, and shop handcrafted sweetgrass baskets and art.

On Hilton Head, Gullah history isn’t just preserved—it’s joyfully shared.
