LAB MANAGER

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee, coordinate, and assign tasks to department managers across Sample Login, Preparation, Fire Assay, Geochemistry, and Lab Quality Control.
  • Ensure that productivity targets are met while maintaining a strong focus on safety and sustainable lab practices.
  • Work toward achieving and surpassing operational and financial performance goals.
  • Collaborate with on-site HR teams to support recruitment, employee performance management, staff scheduling, and addressing employee relations.
  • Lead by example in promoting and maintaining a culture of safety and environmental responsibility by enforcing lab safety policies and programs.
  • Ensure client deliverables meet expectations, that quality control procedures are followed, and that data errors or inconsistencies are minimized.
  • Maintain compliance with internal Quality Assurance procedures and external regulatory standards, including ISO 17025 requirements.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and manage documentation to support quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Promote and sustain a positive workplace culture, encouraging open communication, employee engagement, and a respectful working environment.
  • Ensure adherence to approved methodologies and SOPs throughout laboratory operations.
  • Manage the complete lifecycle of lab instruments and equipment, including procurement, installation, calibration, maintenance, documentation, and decommissioning.
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies and equipment to enhance testing capabilities and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain and update a list of ongoing and upcoming projects, working with leadership to align priorities and deadlines.
  • Identify project-related risks and develop mitigation plans, including managing external contractors when necessary.
  • Ensure effective communication between departments and stakeholders, maintaining proper documentation and project transparency.
  • Provide leadership and direction to motivate team members toward meeting performance objectives.
  • Monitor ongoing projects, make adjustments as necessary, and ensure key project milestones are communicated and achieved.
  • Modify workflow structures when needed to meet turnaround time (TAT) expectations and evolving client demands.
  • Troubleshoot and support resolution of analytical or technical issues encountered by lab staff.
  • Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timely delivery of all laboratory data reported to clients.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in an analytical laboratory environment.
  • Broad understanding of laboratory instrumentation, systems, and equipment management practices.
  • Knowledge of data integrity principles and regulatory standards such as cGMP.
  • Proven experience in managing lab operations, processes, and teams.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience in a laboratory setting strongly preferred.
  • Strong time management and prioritization abilities; capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Skilled in building cross-functional relationships and leading teams through change.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve people, processes, and lab operations.
  • Creative and analytical approach to problem-solving and innovation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present and train effectively.
  • Experience with quality assurance/quality control procedures in a lab environment is a plus.
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 procedures is an asset.
  • Must be flexible to work extended hours or weekends as needed to meet business or client deadlines.
