Job Description

The Psychology Department at Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital is seeking a motivated and dynamic sports psychologist to join its growing team. The services will play an essential role in elevating the care we provide to young athletes recovering from sports injuries and are vital in enhancing the recovery experience for athletes dealing with both physical and emotional challenges. By addressing the mental and emotional aspects of recovery, services will significantly improve overall outcomes, reduce recovery time, and help athletes return to the sport they love.

The successful candidate must have a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) from an APA-accredited program and be licensed (or license-eligible) in the state of Florida. Completion of an APA-accredited internship and fellowship with formal training in sports psychology is preferred. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team of specialists in a pediatric hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Psychological Support and Recovery: Provide individual and group psychological intervention to young athletes recovering from major sports injuries, helping them cope with the emotional and mental challenges of rehabilitation, including stress, anxiety, depression, and fear of re-injury.
• Collaboration with Sports Therapy Team: Work closely with the sports medicine team, orthopedic surgeons, sports therapists, and other healthcare professionals to integrate psychological services into the comprehensive care plans of injured athletes.
• Mental Health Screening and Assessment: Screen athletes for signs of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and kinesiophobia (fear of re-injury), particularly in those recovering from ACL reconstruction, meniscus repairs, shoulder & hip labrum repairs, medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, and sports-related concussions.
• Development and Implement Recovery Plans: Work with athletes and their families to develop individualized mental health strategies that align with the athlete's physical recovery. Assist athletes in managing their mental well-being throughout the healing process, encouraging positive coping strategies and resilience.
• Education and Prevention: Educate athletes, families, and staff on the importance of mental health during recovery, early identification of potential psychological issues, and the benefits of behavioral health intervention. This is a full-time employed position that offers competitive benefits and a compensation package that is commensurate with training and experience. About Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital

Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital is a 216 bed free-standing childrens hospital in Hollywood, Broward County, Florida located near Fort Lauderdale. The hospital recently underwent a 4-story vertical expansion to double the number of floors and continue to meet its commitment to providing the highest quality and safest care for children in the region. This expansion opened in November 2022 and includes a state-of-the-art Pediatric ICU, a new 20-bed cardiac ICU and step-down unit including new ORs with hybrid capabilities, three cath. labs and an interventional radiology suite. The hospital also expanded its surgical capacity with an addition of other new rooms and an inter-operative MRI.

Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital is one of six hospitals that are part of Memorial Healthcare System, the third largest public health system in the country. Memorial delivers nearly 14,000 babies per year in three hospitals and has 120 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds - both Level II and III services (the state of Florida is in the process of creating a separate designation for Level IV care, for which JDCH qualifies).

Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital (JDCH) has robust high-risk and congenital programs including a US News and World Report ranked pediatric Cardiology and Heart Surgery Program, one of only two active programs in the state that does heart transplants. JDCHs Orthopedic and Sports Medicine program is also ranked by US News and World Report as the top pediatric orthopedic program in Florida four years in a row and is one of the largest programs in the southeastern United States. JDCH also has robust Neurosciences, Hematology/Oncology and other general and specialized surgical programs (approximately 10,000 surgeries per year), and the areas largest pediatric and neonatal transport team, which also does mobile ECMO. JDCH also houses the Center for Complex Care, which is a joint alliance with Boston Childrens Hospital.

JDCH serves over 375,000 children per year from around the state. Approximately 100,000 children are cared for in our three emergency rooms across the county per year. JDCHs services continue to grow with the opening of the new specialty center/ambulatory surgery center in Palm Beach County in 2018 and a new ambulatory pavilion in Miramar, near Miami-Dade County which will open in 2023.

JDCH offers resources for academic pursuits, spanning from clinical research to basic science investigation via affiliations with nearby universities and through its Pediatric Institute for Discovery and Innovation (PIDI).
