This position requires advanced proficiency in assisting surgeons during highly specialized cardiac surgeries, including ECMO, endovascular, transplant (kidney and liver), laparoscopic, and trauma procedures. The technologist ensures patient safety, maintains sterile technique, and supports the surgical team in delivering high-quality care throughout all operative phases.

Position Summary:\n\nThe CVOR Surgical Technologist – First Assist is responsible for preparing and maintaining the surgical environment before, during, and after cardiovascular and thoracic procedures. This position requires advanced proficiency in assisting surgeons during highly specialized cardiac surgeries, including ECMO, endovascular, transplant (kidney and liver), laparoscopic, and trauma procedures. The technologist ensures patient safety, maintains sterile technique, and supports the surgical team in delivering high-quality care throughout all operative phases.\n\nKey Responsibilities:\n\nPreoperative Duties:\n\nPrepare the operating room with appropriate instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for complex cardiac and vascular procedures.\n\nVerify functionality and sterility of all instruments and devices, including ECMO circuits and endovascular tools.\n\nCollaborate with the RN and surgical team to confirm patient identity, procedure, and surgical site.\n\nIntraoperative Duties:\n\nAssist surgeons directly as First Assist, maintaining optimal visibility of the surgical site through retraction, suction, and hemostasis.\n\nPass instruments, sutures, and supplies efficiently while maintaining strict aseptic technique.\n\nHandle and manage cardiovascular grafts, cannulas, prosthetics, and other specialized devices.\n\nAnticipate the needs of the surgical team to ensure smooth procedural flow.\n\nOperate and troubleshoot specialized CVOR equipment as needed.\n\nPostoperative Duties:\n\nCount and account for all instruments, sponges, and sharps in accordance with policy.\n\nClean, decontaminate, and prepare instruments and equipment for sterilization.\n\nRestock and prepare the room for subsequent cases.\n\nAssist in maintaining records and documentation per hospital policy.\n\nSafety and Compliance:\n\nAdhere to all infection control, safety, and surgical asepsis standards.\n\nComply with Joint Commission, AORN, and facility-specific guidelines.\n\nPromote patient advocacy and maintain confidentiality at all times.\n\nQualifications:\n\nEducation:\n\nSuccessful completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program required.\n\nTwo years of experience in a Surgical Technologist role may be accepted in lieu of program completion.\n\nLicensure & Certification:\n\nBLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.\n\nCertification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) preferred.\n\nState licensure (if applicable) required or eligible prior to start date.\n\nExperience:\n\nMinimum of two (2) years of scrub experience or equivalent relevant experience required.\n\nStrong background in cardiac and vascular procedures including ECMO, transplant (kidney and liver), endovascular, laparoscopic, and trauma cases required.\n\nPrior CVOR or tertiary care hospital experience strongly preferred.
